Bangalore : Salt, VR Mall, Whitefield

TD;LR

Salt is one of the finest restaurants for great Indian food, elegant ambiance and pleasing service.

Processed with MOLDIV

While on a visit to VR Mall/Phoenix, it was time for lunch. Though both the malls have quite many options, we all were in the mood for Indian food and Salt was an obvious choice considering my repeat visits at their Koramangala outlet. The other option was Copper Chimney but had visited there earlier and didn’t quite enjoy it. Also the rating of 2.6 meant a strict no no.

Location – Located on the 3rd floor at VR Mall.

Reservations – At the nth hour I made a reservation via EazyDiner which also entailed 10% discount on Food. This place was surprisingly jam packed and only 1 table for 3 was available. Perfect for us. Its a fairly big place, but the Manager said close to 50 people spread across various tables were for corporate team lunches and hence it was jam packed. One other manager said this has been the scene past two weeks. Being a weekday when we visited,  looks like they are doing very good business.

Ambiance – Very good like their Koramangala outlet and yet quite different and distinct. I liked the hanging lights/lamps they have. They also have a mezzanine kind of floor with few tables. The place is quite big and I think close to 50-60 people were in when we visited.

Service – Staff were very friendly, though in the end it took 15 mins to get the Naan and by that time the food had become cold. 😦  I guess one off case.

Food – What we ordered in Veg :

1 Tillwaali Babycorn : It was Babycorn pakoda. Taste was ok, nothing great. Passable.

1 Daal Makhni : The daal here is outstanding and is a regular dish whenever we visit.

1 Paneer Khurchan : Very good, paneer was super soft and the flavors of the overall dish was delicious. Not too bland, not too spicy.

1 Olive Naan : Let down, no taste of olive. It was also cold when it was served. But they took it back and served us hot ones when we mentioned the same.

1 Garlic Naan, 1 Butter Naan : Both were good.

1 Mix Veg Raita : Let down. The curd was not properly beaten and the texture was more curd like than the smooth ones which Raita should ideally have.

2 Virgin Mojito : Very good
2 KF : Chilled

Papad – ordered but never served. Was not added to the bill though.

1 Gulab Jamun Creme Brulee : We wanted the Filter Coffee one which they serve and is delicious. But they didnt have it and hence this one. It was ok. Gulab Jamun didnt quite fit in here. If they small pieces or mashed the Gulab Jamun, it would have tasted better. The way it was, both didnt mix at all. They also served one Gulab Jamun on the side. So it was an awkward combination and felt weird.

Bill : Rs. 2421 all inclusive of taxes, after getting a discount of Rs. 220 or so.  Considering the amount we ordered, its fairly VFM.

Portions : Very good, we three (2 adults and 1 kid) ate to our hearts content.

Closing Words : This was my 4th or 5th visit to Salt though first visit at this outlet. So needless to say, I love the food here and so far they have been very consistent. Other outlet also have Bento Boxes (thali type) on weekdays but here it was missing as they said they are getting good business as it is and hence serving Bento is not feasible. They also had a festival menu(marked up prices) but we ordered from the usual one.

Should you visit? Absolutely!

Happy eating!
